India Cup begins |
Guwahati, Oct. 8: Back to the Northeast after more than a decade, the elite meet for top-notch paddlers of the country will open in the Meghalaya capital tomorrow.
The North East Table Tennis Forum will host the three-day Phani Sharma India Cup at U Tirot Sing Stadium in Shillong from tomorrow.
In a statement to the media today, forum adviser and Arjuna awardee Monalisa Barua Mehta said the meet is being organised in memory of former paddler-turned-table tennis administrator of Assam, Phani Sharma.
Top-rung paddlers of the country, including Assam players Anal Kashyap, Sanjana Sarma and Sanjukta Gogoi, will be seen in action during the meet.
A. Sharath Kamal, Subhajit Saha, Anirban Nandi, G. Tikendra, Shivaji Dutta, A. Amal Raj, Sanil Shethy, Anal Kashyap, Jubin Kumar and Devesh Kania, who will compete in the men’s event, have already arrived.
Among women players, Mouma Das, K. Shamini, Neha S, Soumi Mandal, Mam-ta Babhu, Divya Despande, Mausami Paul, Visakha Vijay, Kasturi Chakrabarty, Sanjukta Gogoi and Sanjana Sarma will vie for the Cup.
The Table Tennis Federation of India has for the first time allowed representation from every state in the region to encourage the sport.
